Scrolling through your life

Another day another study that links social media with increased depression. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-more-you-endlessly-scroll-on-facebook-the-bigger-the-risk-to-your-mental-health-2018-01-12

Please read the above article. There will be questions on your quiz regarding some of the facts.

So for our final post of Q2 I thought we would have an honest share about our own social media habits.

Please answer both of the following:

1) How much time are you spending on social media per day? Which social media platform do you gravitate towards? Do you find it hard to discipline yourself away from it?

2) Studies also found that Instagram users are the most narcisitic: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/beware-of-people-who-always-post-selfies-on-facebook-2015-07-16

Narcissim is defined as: extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.

Do you use Instagram? Do you feel Instagram promotes this type of behavior? What is your experience with the platform?

  1. I know that I spend more time than necessary on the internet. Social media is a convenient, free way to communicate with friends and family. When I need to focus on my work, I usually make an agreement with myself that when I complete a section of work then I can check my phone. This is helps decrease the distraction level social media gives me. While I spend more time on Snapchat, I also use Instagram. My Facebook use was limited to my middle school years when people my age used it more. I agree that narcissism is encourage through social media, not so much because of the photos people take of themselves but because we see unnatural, unrealistic standards online. It is those that make us work harder to have something to show off about the way celebrities do. I believe that if we are aware of the level of distraction we get from our phones and take responsibility for it, we'll be okay. My mom always said, do not post anything you would not want your grandmother to see. This is an important rule to live by. Self control should not be eliminated when you are portraying yourself through a screen.
