Digital Literacy Continued

There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about the abundance of fake news. Fake news is information deliberately posted to confuse people, drive traffic to websites and in many cases can have a significant impact. It is now our job to become detectives of what is real vs. what is fake.

Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:
  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product in the guise of a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following website banner and answer this question:

Of the above which category do all three banners fall under, native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  1. The first advertisement is an example of traditional advertising for "Gotham Writers". It is very similar to the ads we see on the Internet. The second advertisement is an actual news story with a backstory about almonds. The third advertisement is native advertising. You can read that it is "sponsored content" but appears to be a news story about women in the tech field.

  2. The first advertisement is an example of tradiional advertising because it's trying to sell you somethng and even offers a promo code to use. The second advertisement is an actual news stories that talks abut the link to almonds and the drought in California. The last advertiement is an actual news story however it says sponsored content so it might be considered an advertisment.

  4. The first advertisement is traditional advertising because it is clearly trying to sell you something with a promo code that would increase the likability of people clicking on it. the second one is news story because it wasn't sponsored by anyone and provides actual information. The last is native advertising because it is trying to tell you information that looks like news but reading the "sponsored content" shows it isn't news.

  5. I think the first one is a traditional advertising because it isn't based on a real content or about the news, its just trying to sell their product. The second one is a news story because it contains true information on the subject. And the 3rd on is a native advertising because they're trying to sell their products with using some information.
